The Controller Got the Last Word

I was in O’hare for one of the first times as a First Officer and was studying the airport map trying to figure out where we were and how to keep up with the rapid pace of the ground controller’s instructions.  It is an incredibly busy place, and everyone has to pay attention to keep the flow going.  I then heard an exchange between an airliner and ground control.  The airliner wasn’t getting his way and was making his irritation very obvious to the controller and everyone else on the frequency.  Finally the controller reached the breaking point and said: “Airline 452 pay attention! Get yourself a sharp pencil and get ready to write.  I’m going to give you a clearance that will take over a minute to copy and about a half an hour to execute.” It is not wise to spit in Superman’s face.
