A Heads Up Would Have Been Nice

You know how the Controllers always tell you about traffic that you don’t care about and sometimes don’t tell you about the guy that you would like to have known about.  – We were driving along on a beautiful blue sky day at 280 and sharing some war stories.  All of a sudden the cockpit gets dark like we are in a shadow.  I look out the windows and my entire peripheral vision is occupied by aluminum.  The Captain and I did exactly the same thing – clicked off the autopilot and pulled the throttles back as we were ducking and trying to dive underneath the traffic.  As fast as the shadow appeared, it was gone.  The Captain and I both looked up to an empty sky.  Whatever was there was now gone.  He flew up the 100 feet that we had lost and hooked up the autopilot.  The engineer was still on the floor but mentioned that he thought it was military.  Turns out it was a C-5 at FL 290.  Legal separation had been maintained.  The controller was not required to say anything, but it sure would have been nice.
