Flight Engineer Student Dealing with Unexpected Problem
I was at the tail end of a type ride for a new hire Flight Engineer. He had done extremely well and in my mind had already passed the check ride. Two engines were shut down as the Check Captain was about 2 miles out on approach to the final landing. I thought I might have some fun with the Check Captain and punched off the remaining engine. He didn’t bat an eye as we continued to glide toward the landing. Unfortunately I had forgotten about the impact on the Flight Engineer student. He must have flipped every switch on the entire panel two or three times trying to recover the last generator before I realized what was going on. He probably thought he had busted the ride when I started laughing. I finally explained that he had already passed and just relax and enjoy the show as the Captain made a grease job with our glider. Not a good move on my part but it ended okay.
