He’s Lost
I was getting ready to head to Fayetteville when a fellow Captain came in the cockpit. I initially thought he was a jumpseat rider, but as he explained, he was high minimums and was wondering if I could take his flight to Tri-Cities instead of Fayetville. Tri-Cities had been closed most of the day but had finally gotten up to CAT II minimums. He couldn’t fly it, but I could. As I showed up at the departure lounge, the passengers all cheered. No idea what PA announcement had triggered that, but I climbed in and off we went. The weather was right at minimums and the landing was uneventful. Unfortunately as I turned off the runway, I realized I was in a black hole. I advised the Flight Attendants that it was going to be very slow going as I could barely see anything. Then I overheard the PA announcement she made: "Folks, the Captain just advised that he is lost. He has got all his maps out and has called the Coast Guard, but it is going to take a long time to get to the gate. Please be patient." I started to groan, thinking about the letters I was going to have to write, but then the whole cabin broke out in laughter. It was just fine after all.
