The Commute Home Looked Easy
On the last leg of the four day trip and headed to CLT. As it turned out our flight was continuing on to my real home with about a 50 minute turn time. The arrival gate was on the same concourse as the Crew Room, so it looked like I would have plenty of time to say goodbye to the crew, take my bags downstairs and return for the leg home. We arrived right on schedule. The marshallers were there and the gate agent was ready to bring the jetway up. That’s when the problem began. The jetway had been raised up for a previous arrival and the jetway driver couldn’t seem to get it lowered for us. The drug lady showed up and was waiting impatiently to deliver her envelopes to a few “lucky” crew members. The jetway driver messed with it for a while, as we called Operations for help and to discuss options. Getting an airstairs for us was out as it was raining pretty hard. It was finally decided to push off the gate and taxi to a gate on the other concourse. Upon getting wind of the plan, the drug lady took off running to catch up to us before we could disappear. That got us laughing. We taxied over to the new gate and got off. Of course now we were late, and the gate would be trying for a minimum turn. As I got off the aircraft, the departure lounge looked fairly empty so I knew I would have to hurry. I got back just in time to see my ride home pushing off the gate without me. How could I possibly have missed it. One consolation – the drug lady never did catch up to us.
