A Fart at 35000 Feet
We were crusing at FL 350 on a beautiful day. I was on the jumpseat giving a line check to a new hire – older lady Flight Engineer. She was very nervous and facing the panel probably trying to remember if there was anything she had missed when I cut a very quiet but obnoxiously smelly fart. The Captain and the First Officer had both forgotten about me and turned in unison to stare at our rookie Flight Engineer. She continued to stare at the Engineer Panel apparently too nervous to voice her own discomfort. After a moment, the First Officer spied me in the back reaches of the cockpit and realized that I was the culprit. That brought out the laughter and I joined in but the nervous rookie just stared at the panel as if that would make the smell go away.
